How a repair visit actually goes

The most expensive AC repairs we see are usually the ones that got misdiagnosed the first time. A tech swapped a part, the system ran for two weeks, then quit again. We’d rather take an extra twenty minutes upfront and get it right.

Here’s how we work through it:

1. We start by asking questions before we touch anything. When did it stop? Is it constant or does it come and go? Has a breaker tripped? Any smells, noises, or ice? Those details matter more than people expect. “Blowing warm air” can mean five different things depending on what else is happening.
2. Then we inspect the whole system, not just the obvious stuff. Electrical connections, coil condition, condensate drainage, refrigerant performance, airflow. A lot of failures that look sudden actually started as smaller problems building quietly for months.
3. Once we find the cause, we explain it in plain language and give you a quote before any work starts. If the repair doesn’t make financial sense given the age or condition of the system, we’ll say that too. You’ll have real options, not pressure.
4. After the repair we test everything and verify the system is cooling correctly before we leave. If we spot something that could cause the next breakdown, like a severely clogged filter or a drain that’s going to clog again in six weeks, we’ll show you what we’re seeing.

Symptoms worth paying attention to

Your system usually gives you signals before it quits completely. These are the ones we hear about most often on repair calls:

• Warm air, or the house stops keeping up in the afternoon even when the thermostat is set normally
• Weak airflow at vents, sometimes worse in certain rooms
• The system turns on and off more frequently than it used to
• Noises that weren’t there before, buzzing, banging, grinding, clicking
• Musty or burning smells, or water pooling near the indoor unit

Any of those showing up, don’t wait for a weekend to deal with it. Small problems have a way of becoming full shutdowns at the worst possible time.

Common AC problems we fix

1. System running but not cooling. This one has a long list of possible causes. Thermostat issues, dirty coils, a failing capacitor or contactor, refrigerant problems, duct leakage. We test for the simple explanations first.
   • Worth knowing: ENERGY STAR data shows that 20-30% of air moving through a typical duct system can be lost to leaks, which tanks efficiency and mimics equipment failure. If we think ducts are driving the problem, we’ll tell you.
2. Ice on the coil or refrigerant lines. Almost always tied to airflow restrictions or refrigerant issues. We fix the underlying cause, not just defrost it, so you’re not back in the same situation in three weeks.
3. Water leaking near the indoor unit. Cooling creates condensation, and that water has to go somewhere. When the drain clogs, the system can shut itself off or overflow. We inspect the drain, pan, and safety switch, then address whatever caused the blockage.
4. Electrical and control failures. Loose connections, bad capacitors, worn contactors. These can stop a system from starting or cause erratic operation. We identify what failed, explain why, and confirm the system is running correctly after the fix.
5. Refrigerant leaks. Low refrigerant isn’t a normal maintenance item. It means there’s a leak or an installation problem somewhere. We look for it, discuss repair options, and handle refrigerant correctly. EPA Section 608 requires certification for anyone servicing equipment that could release refrigerants. Our technicians have it.

A few things to check before you call: If your cooling stops, these are worth a quick look. Don’t do anything that feels unsafe, and if you smell burning or see smoke, turn the system off and call immediately. Thermostat set to COOL, temperature set below the current indoor reading. Filter condition, if it looks clogged replace it. Outdoor unit clear of debris with room to breathe around it.
